Your b est bet for unused paint is to give it away (to a school,
com m unity group, or local theater) or using it up (such as on a
shed or a basem ent wall). If you aren 't able to do either of these,
th en choose from these disposal m ethods.
O il- b a s e p a i n t
Oil-base or alkyd paint
is considered hazardous
w aste and should never
be disposed of in the
trash . Check w ith your
local w aste-m anagem ent
dep artm en t to see if
your com m unity has
a collection center or
offers a designated day
w hen you can drop off
your unused paint.

W ater-base or latex paint
isn’t hazardous, so don’t plan
to take it to a collection site
(if it’s accepted, you m ay be
charged). You can put it in
the tra sh if you tu rn it into a
solid. A sm all am ount of paint
will dry in a few days w hen
th e lid is left off. M ixing in cat
litter or saw dust speeds the
process. A solidifier hardens
paint in a few m inutes (see
one exam ple at

D ispose of th e lid and
can separately.
